Back in September 2022, Taiwan opened its doors to tourists again. And to attract even more tourists, they launched an initiative in May 2023 – Taiwan the Lucky Land. Lucky individuals will get to walk away with a travel prize worth NTD 5000 (SGD 220).
Travel prizes will come in the form of an EasyCard (generally used in the North), iPass (generally used in the South) or hotel vouchers (5 x NTD 1000).
From May 1, 2023 to June 30, 2025, individuals traveling to Taiwan for a period of 3 to 90 days, are not holding Taiwanese passports, and are not part of tour groups, can take part in this program.
Eligible travelers can fill in the online form between one and seven days before their travel here: https://5000.taiwan.net.tw/people2_en.html. Personal information such as name, nationality, passport number, arrival and departure dates and flight details will need to be provided. Additionally, individuals will have the option on selecting the type of prize they would like to receive.
A QR code will be sent to the individual’s email upon successful completion of the form.
When in the Taiwan airport, participants can present their QR code at the ‘Taiwan the Lucky Land’ pavilion (in the public arrival area) where iPads have been set-up and you can scan your QR code there.
Lanterns (天灯) will appear on the screen and participants have to select any of it to reveal the prize (or a consolation message). If one is fortunate to win a prize, head over to the counter to collect the prize!
While the chances of winning in this program may not be high, many people I know have participated and it doesn’t hurt to give it a try! Although I didn’t receive a prize, my travel partner did, and his joy was unmatched! He was fortunate enough to receive the iPass card, which is valid for use on the metro systems, public buses, and convenience stores. You can find a list of stores where the card can be used here.
