Review: OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G

Announced in November 2021 and officially available in Singapore from January 15, 2022, the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G phone is OPPO’s latest mobile phone from the Reno series on the market.

The phone is visually very appealing – the Startails Blue colour gives the phone a nice blueish, greenish tinge that shimmers from different angles. The squarish phone with rounded edges makes it easy to hold and can I say – the phone is extremely light for its size. For comparison, my iPhone 12 (5.78 inches) stands at 164g while the Reno7 Pro 5G (6.55 inches) comes in at 180g.

Camera

This phone boasts a massive 50MP wide camera, 2MP macro camera, and an 8MP ultra-wide camera on its rear, and a 32MP front camera. These cameras are touted to be some of the best in this series and are accompanied by some of the latest imaging sensors available on the market. Accompanied by OPPO’s Quadra Binning algorithm, the front sensor enables photos to be taken with greater colour and light clarity. Also, its smart wide-angle algorithm on the front camera automatically adjusts according to group size and is honestly pretty fascinating.

Images taken using the OPPO camera have such distinct colour – and the clarity of it can be seen through this image alone. The image on the left shows more smudge marks on the surface of the tub and a more true colour.

Similarly, the colour pick-up from the camera brings a lot of vibrancy to images. It picks up colour extremely well and the colour sensors and technology help ensure that the videos come out with such colour.

One of the coolest features I like about this phone is its video quality. Apart from being able to take 4K videos, the camera’s technologies allow for locked focusing on the subject when taking movement videos. The stabilisation feature also allows for greater smoothness when capturing videos.

Linked within the camera application itself is SoLoop application that allows for easy editing of videos. SoLoop templates can be accessed directly from the camera application itself and enable users like us to create quick short clips very easily. See a short clip on.. pineapple tarts here. This isn’t a fair clip to showcase what this application can do but you get my point.

Other Cool Stuff

One area that lights up, other than the front screen, of course, is the rim around the rear cameras when it is charging (also called breathing light). It can be customized to light up when the phone is being charged, to quickly blink for incoming calls, slowly blink for notifications and blink for game launches. This neat feature notifies you without lighting up your entire screen.

This OPPO phone comes with a charger and charging cable – honestly a rare sight these days. The battery can be charged really quickly – I managed to charge the phone from 0% to 69% in about 20 minutes with the fast charger. High usage warrants more charging but I’ve to say that the battery drain is similar to the iPhone 12.

Conclusion

This phone runs fast – video editing, watching of videos and more can be done smoothly. The camera is amazing – the colour that it picks up coupled with AI and sensors technology allows one to easily create quality images and video. One downside is that this phone heats up rather quickly – but this is common to phone when you’re using it heavily.

Would I recommend this phone? Yes, I would definitely recommend it as it makes a great camera phone.
