Vivo V70 review: The practical daily companion

The Vivo V70 is the kind of smartphone that wins by being useful rather than flashy. In Singapore (and many places in the world for that matter), where people care about camera capabilities, long battery life and a screen that is readable outdoors, it feels like a very practical daily companion.

Thanks to Vivo, I had the opportunity to test this latest midrange smartphone, which incidentally doesn’t feel midrange at all. It’s light, comfortable in the hand, and has and can do everything I need.

For this review, I brought the phone on a trip to Las Vegas as well as tested it in Singapore Zoo, one of the nation’s top tourist spot.

In Vegas, I used it for an event and to attend a screening at the world famous Sphere. The shots taken were indoor and at night.

In Singapore, I went to Singapore Zoo on a sunny day to capture shots of some animals.

The results for both were impressive. The Vivo V70 has so many pluses and here are just three that matters lots to me.

What’s good

1. The camera setup is the headline act, with a 50MP Zeiss main camera, 50MP telephoto lens, and AI Stage Mode that helps keep performers sharp even when shooting from the back of a hall. In the Sphere, I was seated near the top, which is a long way from the screen. Yet, the photos turned out well.

      2. The camera software is where it scores well against the competition. It’s stacked with modes such as Zeiss Portrait, AI Stage Mode, and scene-based options such as Photo, Video, Portrait, Night, High Resolution, Dual View, and Film Camera. One mode which piqued my interest but did not manage to try out in Underwater Photography.

      3. Its battery life is a real plus. Featuring a 6,500mAh battery and 90W charging, the phone is well suited for all-day use.

      What could be better

The only real weakness is that the V70 still plays it safe on performance. It is smooth enough for everyday use, but if you are looking for a phone for demanding games or heavy multitasking, this is not ideal for you.

      Recommendation

The Vivo V70 is a smart, well-rounded smart phone that does the basics well with a surprisingly capable camera experience on top. It is an easy recommendation if you want a polished smartphone with strong imaging and long battery life without moving into flagship pricing. Available in Golden Hour and Alphine Grey colourways, it is priced at S$799 (12GB RAM and 256GB storage).

      It’s best for:

      • Concert-goers and event shooters who will can leverage the AI Stage Mode.
      • Those who want good portraits and zoom shots without paying flagship phone prices.
      • Daily users who care more about battery, camera, and practicality than benchmark scores.

And if price is a concern, there is the Vivo Y series that starts from just S$139. The series of midrange smartphones provide a balance of stylish aesthetics, dependable performance and affordability.
