The Sphere: Simply stunning inside and outside

When I knew I was heading to Las Vegas to cover an event, the first thing that came to mind was not the casino nor the entertainment, but a visit to The Sphere.

I had seen numerous clips of this entertainment venue on Tiktok and other social media platforms since its opening in 2023.

The massive spherical structure, standing 111 metres tall and 157 metres wide, redefines immersive experience. It is adorned with a stunning exterior LED display that spans 54,000 square metres, making it a visual spectacle visible from multiple vantage points across the city.

On my way to the city from Harry Reid International Airport, I was thrilled when The Sphere came into view. It was stunning and well-lit even in the bright afternoon sun.

My joy upped several levels when my room at The Venetian had a great view of the venue.

Even better was that my event host booked us for a show at The Sphere. I couldn’t have asked for more.

Inside, The Sphere boasts a 16K resolution wraparound LED screen covering nearly 15,000 square metres, complemented by an advanced spatial audio system featuring 167,000 speakers. The seating area includes haptic technology, allowing attendees to feel atmospheric effects such as vibrations and temperature changes.

Postcard from Earth

I experienced it first hand watching the film Postcard from Earth directed by Darren Aronofsky. The visually stunning 55-minute film was specifically created for The Sphere’s unique capabilities. Shot in 18K resolution using the Big Sky camera system, it offers a breathtaking 270-degree viewing experience, incorporating climate control, haptic seating, and scents to immerse viewers in the story of life on Earth.

The narrative follows astronauts who, after a long hibernation, embark on a journey to understand Earth’s history through a virtual reality presentation. It starts with the creation of Earth and the destructive impact of humans, and ends with people fleeing the planet so that it could recover (brought back memories of how plants grew and animals returned during the COVID-19 lockdown).

The use of 4D technology let us feel wind, smell landscapes and experience sensations such as flying, making it a truly unique experience (like a bigger version of iMax Theatres).

Conclusion

The visit to The Sphere is one check off my bucket list. It’s simply stunning both inside and outside, and a must-do when in Las Vegas.

As I departed the city, The Sphere is like a start that stands out even in a glitzy city like Las Vegas.
