Regeneration is a ten-episode Chinese thriller that takes viewers on quite a suspenseful adventure that uncovers the mystery of interpersonal relationships and hidden truths.
Journalist He Shan, played by Zhou Yi Ran, receives an invitation at her workplace to a memorial service for Fei Ke, played by Jing Bo Ran. At the service, He Shan meets four others who knew Fei Ke personally: Chen Shu Fa (Wang Yan Hui), Zhang Xuan/Xuan Er (Zhang Yi Fan), Cheng Hao (Huang Jue), and Su Qian (Peng Yang). As they begin to share individually about their relationship with Fei Ke, they quickly learn that each person’s recollection of who he was differs significantly.
Their differing perspectives compel the group to investigate his past. As they delve deeper, He Shan and others discover unsettling clues that gradually seemed to reveal Fei Ke’s true personality – one that is purely on greed.
Later in the series, He Shan begins doubting their accounts using some of her previous investigative work, which is where the plot twist occurs. As the show progresses, the suspense builds up to unveil who Fei Ke actually is, and how each person’s stories are not what it seemed.
What I really enjoyed about this series is that each character’s emotional struggles and histories allowed for quite a wholesome development of character and relatability. I liked how it touched on everyday struggles and greed and how it affects relationships. The show also explores the theme on how everyone has a unique tale to tell and shows how subjective and multifaceted the truth can be – definitely a great reminder to not always listen to only one side of the story!
Regeneration is available on Netflix.
